New Chronicle Box for the Corner
Some of you may have noticed that the old Chronicle distribution box near the corner of Canyonleigh Road and Tugalong Road has come to a sad end. It’s actually surprising that it lasted as long as it did. Read the rest of this entry »
Pardalotes dig in for Winter
When the going gets cold, the cold get burrowing
As the cold settles in, little pardalotes in Canyonleigh are digging in for winter. You may see these tiny birds in your garden, along roadsides or in parks and golf courses, getting down and dirty to excavate their nest out of soft sandy soil.
Australia’s Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife’s Backyard Buddies program is all about getting more enjoyment from native animals in your backyard. It provides tips and advice on how to make your backyard a haven for our burrowing buddy. Read the rest of this entry »
Book Recommendation
WILLOWS FOR WEEPING
Felicity Pulman
Random House
North Sydney 2008
Family and friends are always lending me books. At last count there were 16 piled beside my bed, all at various stages of being read. If you’ve lent me a book I haven’t yet retuned, I apologise, but I haven’t forgotten you or who owns which book. I promise I’ll return all eventually. The recommended book is one such loan. It is the fourth book in the Janna Mysteries series. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it. Aimed at teens, as I’ve always claimed – there’s no age limit to reading material. It is not necessary to have read the prior book in the series, you pick up a lot of the background information along the way but it does whet your appetite for wanting to read more in the series. Set in the twelfth century against the true backdrop in English history of Stephen’s tussle with his cousin Matilda for the throne, this book keeps up a good pace throughout and also the intrigue which makes it a must to finish. Characters are well drawn and highly imaginable.

Sutton Forest Public School Needs YOU!!!!
Since approximately 1920, Sutton Forest Public School has been the local school for Canyonleigh. Even though pupil numbers have fluctuated between 16 and 68 during those years, the School has always enjoyed the support and enthusiasm of the community.
This year, Sutton Forest Public School is holding its Monster Fete on Saturday, 20th November. Despite our best efforts, there is not a large enough parent base to cover all arenas at the Fete, and we need many volunteers to help out on the day. Read the rest of this entry »
Hall Report
What a year it’s been for the Canyonleigh Hall and its kitchen upgrade!!!! The committee has been granted funding from both our local council and the N.S.W. Country Halls Renewal Fund for this upgrade. To date, money which we have received from Council has enabled us to install the new stove and splash back, new cupboards and crockery and glassware to fill them. We now have place settings for 80, which includes plain white dinner plates, side plates, latte style mugs, water glasses and wine glasses. As you are probably aware, we already had the tablecloths and cutlery. All this new tableware will be available for hire at a reasonable cost. Read the rest of this entry »
Two Thongs Do Make A Right
On Saturday 15th May, United Future Foundation created a fascinating sight, as 650 Sydneysiders accessorised their black tie with thongs.
United Future Foundation is a non-government, not-for-profit organisation building an educational centre in rural Uganda. The educational centre will include a primary school and vocational education for adults in the community. UFF was co-founded by two young Australians, Annabelle Chauncy (a Canyonleigh girl) and Dave Everett, whilst they were still at university. Their vision is to break the cycle of poverty through education. Since the official launch of the organisation in 2009, UFF has built a significant network of support throughout corporate and NGO organisations in Sydney and Uganda. Read the rest of this entry »
Environmental Leigh
With the shortest day of the year behind us, daylight hours are now lengthening even though temperatures may still be headed downwards. In the depths of winter, there are few things better than a warming fire. But while I could just sit and enjoy the not so frosty feeling, I feel a bit guilty if I’m not putting the heat to some productive use other than keeping me warm. Waste not, want not, as the saying goes. So aside from a pot of soup and the kettle, from time to time there’s a big pot or two on the fire here with something else bubbling away. Occasionally, I’ll even put a boiler outside on the barbie. Read the rest of this entry »
