Working to reinstate a bus to take our infant and primary students to Sutton Forest Public School:
Ms Julie Harris has agreed to head a sub-committee of the Association to work to reinstate a small bus for infant and primary school children from Canyonleigh attending Sutton Forest Public School. Currently those infant and primary school students are obliged to take the earlier bus, with secondary students, which make it a long day for the younger students. The key point seems to be the need, under the Dept of Transport’s guidelines, for at least 15 infant and primary students from Canyonleigh to justify a small bus being reinstated. Ms Harris is working very hard to demonstrate that number of students would be travelling to Sutton Forest primary school in 2011, if not earlier. Ms Harris has the power to co-opt sub-committee members to assist her in this important submission and, on behalf of the community, we thank her for the detailed research she has already carried out.

Tugalong Station D/A – significantly increased traffic volume will have various negative effects:
The Association submitted a letter to Council relating to the Development Application for a proposed Motocross & Trail Riding Recreation Complex at Tugalong Station. The letter focused on the fact that if the D/A is approved by Council, the significantly increased traffic volume will have various negative effects on the many property owners and tenants along Canyonleigh Road, Inverary Road and Tugalong Road. Accordingly, the Association submitted that any Council approval include 2 conditions (a) traffic volume be monitored prior to the D/A becoming effective and again 12 months after the approved development is fully operational. (b) the complex be banned from operating when the fire danger in the area is Very High, Extreme or Catastrophic. If traffic volumes are significantly increased the Association has asked Council, as a duty of care, to complete the sealing of Tugalong Road and upgrade Canyonleigh Road, Inverary Road and the existing sealed portion of Tugalong Road. A copy of the letter is at the Canyonleigh Store. The Southern Villages Group, consisting of similar groups to our Association in Bundanoon, Exeter, Penrose, Sutton Forest and Wingello, has written to Council with their objection to this D/A stating is a highly undesirable development for the Canyonleigh area.

Long wall mining in Sutton Forest – and Canyonleigh?
A meeting called by Pru Goward MP at the Sutton Forest Hall on 18 August saw 300 people pack the hall. Cockatoo Coal and Korean steel manufacturer, POSCO, have entered into a $70 million agreement to explore a lease held by Anglo-American south of Berrima. Cockatoo Coal said there was 115 million tonnes of coking coal at the site but the plan is still at an infant stage and there would not be a mine for several years. One of our members attended the meeting and reported the area runs from Sutton Forest to Canyonleigh. The Southern Highlands Coal Action Group has been formed and we will work to clarify, what part of Canyonleigh, if any, is proposed to be mined and the implication of any such mining. George Barnett reminded us that there have been 2 coal mines in Canyonleigh in the past, namely, near Black Bobs Creek behind Eccleston Park, off Canyonleigh Road and the Araluen mine, off Foxgrove Road.

Social events:

Trivia Night on 31 July was an action packed evening with tables fighting it out for the honours of the top table, based on the 1980’s theme. The Association is indebted to Carolyn and Ken Chaplin’s incredibly generous contribution in organising all those questions and answers, and they were wonderfully supported by the Association’s Cathy Attreed and Julie Chamouille. Our thanks also go to community members who donated prizes. The evening resulted in $797 being raised for Canyonleigh Emergency Aid.

Carols by Candlelight at 6pm on Saturday, 18 December 2010 at Satori Springs, 250 Tugalong Road. Bring family, friends, picnic and blanket. The ‘Christmas Choir of Canyonleigh’ is bringing together men, women and children from Canyonleigh and district for this special occasion, which is being held in conjunction with the Canyonleigh Community Association. Mark it in your diary now.

Population of Canyonleigh:
In response to a recent question from a member, the population of Canyonleigh is 293, consisting of 151 males and 142 females. Canyonleigh is an area of 129.8 square kilometres. Source: Australian Bureau of Statistics 2006 Census.

Following the successful running of this training day with two separate groups last year, the Fire Brigade is offering another day of training on 18 September 2010.

This training is aimed at those people who need to make a decision whether to stay and defend OR to leave early. This day will help you to understand what will be involved and how to plan for a bushfire.

The day is very practical and designed to be fun as well as educational. The morning session opens with theory on fire behaviour, personal protective clothing and equipment, preparation of your home, what to take when you leave if that is your plan and on extreme and catastrophic weather days. A guest speaker shares her fire plan and an activity explores stress and operating under stressful situations.

The afternoon begins with simulating what it will be like in a fire before participants move outside to extinguish a number of blazes using common household resources like mops and buckets.

The day concludes with a session on pumps and hoses, each participant gaining practice in starting pumps and using hoses to extinguish spot fires that erupt around them.

The feedback to date on these courses has been excellent with word of them reaching fire control in town who have asked the Brigade to give a presentation on their content.

The course is free and is open to anybody (including weekenders) in the area who think they may benefit from it.
The only course scheduled for this year is being held on Saturday 18 September 2010. It will commence at 0800 and finish around 1600. Lunch is supplied with a gold coin donation requested. All you need to bring is yourself, a pen and notebook and wear the type of clothing you will wear if a fire is threatening your property.

Spaces are limited so please book early with Frances Crown on 4878 9272.
